Let’s Make a Deal!

The Bible is full of stories of people “making deals.”

In Luke 16, the unjust stewarmontyhalld makes deals with his master’s debtors, in order to make friends with them.  Ultimately, he is praised for this act.

Young David, when approaching the battlefield where the giant Goliath is taunting the armies of Israel, hears of the deal that King Saul offered to whoever would slay the giant:  get rich, marry the king’s daughter, and never have to pay taxes again.  (1Sam 17:25)

Last Sunday in 1Samuel 1, we saw Hannah make a deal with God for a son.  If God would provide – she would give him back to God.  Hannah kept her word.  God likes that.  In fact, He lets us make deals (He calls them “vows”) with Him – but know for sure that He is serious about expecting us to keep our end of the bargain.

Ultimately, your eternal salvation is a deal that you make with God.  You give Him your life and He will give you His life in return.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

How ridiculous is it that we would ask God to give us His holy, spotless, eternal life – in exchange for our rotten, sinful, temporary life – and then once we get His life, we take ours back too?!  How selfish can we possibly be?

The fully surrendered life is the only life that God recognizes.  It is not “super-spiritual.”  It is the normal Christian life.  Is there anything in your life that you are not allowing God to control?  Turn it all over to Him – it’s simply a matter of you keeping your part of the deal.
