Roadmap

For 3 weeks in January we have looked at our future vision for FBC. Besides being reminded of our biblical responsibilities to LOVE God and people, GROW in our relationship with Him and SHARE His message with the world, we talked about the specifics of what that will look like for us at this local church.   We called it the “Roadmap.”

You can listen to those messages here:

Now, much of what we are proposing is really very similar to what FBC has always known.  We still value and practice personal discipleship.  It is still a one-on-one teaching / learning environment.  All we have changed is the tool we are using.  The doctrine is the same – only the presentation is different.

What once was called “D2” (discipleship level 2) is now called “Ministry Tools & Training.” It is 6 classroom courses, approximately 12 weeks each.  Running from September to June at one 2 hr/week time slot, it will take 2 years to complete this level.  It is designed to give you the “tools” necessary to carry out ministry.  Hence the name.  Clever – I know.  One aspect that we will be incorporating is the element of required practical application.  Whether it be homework exercises for the class on “How to study the Bible,” or specific community involvement as we learn about our spiritual gifts, students will not just come, sit, listen, take notes and leave.  We really need to be using these tools.  “Use it or lose it!”

Once upon a time, there was an animal called “Shepherd’s School of Ministry” here at FBC.  There are rumors that that animal is extinct.  Not totally true.  He may have been hibernating.  Maybe better yet, in a cocoon awaiting the time to break out as a much more developed creature – one that has wings and can fly!  The new, improved version will be called:  Leadership Training Institute. (LTI – for short)  Again, no extra points for the most creative, hip title – but nonetheless a very descriptive one.  It will be an institute of study to train men and women to be leaders in God’s ministry.  As such, we will still study deeper doctrinal issues of the scripture, but also require concurrent leadership responsibility in an established FBC ministry.  The goal is for this to not last longer than 3 years.  Upon completion you will be awarded your wings and we hope to help you fly wherever God leads you to fly!

So, that’s the Roadmap.  If the 5+ years seem a little overwhelming to you, consider it this way:  you are (Lord willing) going to be around for the next 5 years anyway, you might as well be doing something that will prepare you to spend the rest of your life in fruitful ministry for the Lord Jesus!  Like any journey, just take it one step at a time!  Enjoy the trip!
